Before its proclamation as a nature reserve the area was badly overgrazed ant the present policy is to allow the vegetation to recover before introducing more game animals. The landscape of Commando Drift consist of open plains covered with Karoo scrub, rugged hills, and ravines through which treelined watercourses flow. Small populations of Cape mountain zebra, kudu, black wildebeest, blesbok and springbok have already been released into the reserve A wide variety of waterbirds occur in the reserve and fish, martial and black eagles have been recorded. Location: Central part of the region; west of Tarkastad. Access: The reserve is located 56 km north-eastwards from Cradock (take the signposted right-hand fork when the road splits approximately 10 km outside Cradock) and 34 km westwards from Tarkastad. The access road is R61, which has a good grave surface. Permits are available at the information centre. Accommodation: 3 4-bed stone cabins with basic facilities (R36 per cabin per night); overnight trail hut; camping and caravan site with ablution facilities (R12 per site per day for 4 persons, R3 per person per day); 6-bed fully-equipped chalet (R80). Other facilities: Self-guided 2-hour hiking trail, 2-day hiking trail, picnic sites with fireplaces; walking; conducted day and night game drives; mountain biking (to be arranged in advance); information centre, watersports and swimming are permitted; fishing (licence required). The nearest shop and fuel supplies are at Tarkastad. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 07h00 to 18h00; arrangements can be made for day visitors to stay longer. |
